We had a successful past few months in Granada! With the help of our volunteers and generous donations, we were able to offer various art classes, events and field trips to the students at Escuelita Yo Puedo and Quinta Los Chavalos. Here are the summaries of our recent projects:

¡Tuvimos varios meses éxitosos en Granada! Con el apoyo de nuestros voluntarios y las donaciones generosas, ofrecimos varias clases de arte, eventos y paseos a los alumnos de Escuelita Yo Puedo y Quinta Los Chavalos. Aquí hay resumenes de los proyectos recientes:

Mercado Still Live/Naturaleza Muerta del Mercado

We brought a bag of vegetables and fruit fresh from the marketplace and arranged them into a colorful still life. Students practiced drawing from observation, using the elements of light, color and depth. The drawings look great.

Trajimos una bolsa de verduras y frutas frescas del mercado y las arreglamos en una naturaleza muerta llena de color. Los alumnos practicaron dibujando de observación, usando los elementos de arte. ¡Los dibujos son excelentes!

Favorite Trees/Árboles Preferidos

We learned about the native trees to Nicaragua, and each student chose his or her favorite, to draw the tree and its fruit.

Aprendimos sobre los árboles nativos de Nicaragua, y cada alumno elegió su árbol preferido y dibujó el árbol y su fruta.





Talk with artist Peta Kaplan/Charla con artista Peta Kaplan

We invited painter Peta Kaplan to talk about her artwork, portraits of local street dogs in Granada.

Invitamos a la pintora Peta Kaplan para charlar sobre su arte, retratos de los perros callejeros de Granada.



Field trip to San Juan de Oriente/Paseo a San Juan de Oriente

Visiting volunteer-artist Inês Castelo Branco brought students to San Juan de Oriente, a nearby town famous for its beautiful pottery. Ceramist Valentín talked about Nicaraguan ceramics and gave a hand-on workshop to the students.

Voluntario-artista Inês Castelo Branco facilitó un paseo con los alumnos, a San Juan de Oriente, un pueblo cercano, famoso por su cerámica. Ceramista Valentín habló de la cerámica nicaragüense y dio un taller de práctica a los alumnos.

Clay sculptures/Esculturas de barro

At Quinta Los Chavalos, older students worked on their own clay pots to hold plants, and younger students created clay figurines.

En Quinta Los Chavalos, los alumnos mayores trabajaron en sus vasijas para plantas, y los alumnos menores crearon figurinas de barro.

Student art show/Exposición de arte de alumnos

At the end of the drawing classes, teachers and volunteers at Escuelita Yo Puedo organized an art exhibition of the students' work. We displayed their work around the school, and had a reception and invited their families, who were very proud!

Al terminar las clases de dibujo, los maestros y voluntarios de Escuelita Yo Puedo organizaron una exposición del arte que hicieron los alumnos. Expusimos las obras en la escuela, y tuvimos un refrigerio a que invitamos las famlias orgullosas.

Inês Castelo Branco in Granada

Sculptor Inês Castelo Branco, from Lisbon, Portugal, is teaching sculpture classes at Quinta Los Chavalos during August. Students are working on clay sculptures and pottery. They will travel to San Juan de Oriente, to attend a clay workshop and learn about ceramics in Nicaragua.

Colfax Elementary School Carnival

We recently participated in Colfax School's annual Carnival, by setting up a Central American tent. In addition to offering an art activity, we decorated our tent with arts and crafts representing Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. Colfax is a K-8 school and we were able to attract the attention of hundreds of students and their parents.

Participamos en el Carnaval de la escuela primaria, Colfax School, para representar las culturas de Centroamérica. Hicimos unas actividades artísticas y decoramos con artesanía de Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica y Panamá. Colfax sirve alumnos de jardín infantil hasta el octavo grado y muchos alumnos y sus padres mostraron interés en el proyecto.
